Chiropractic

Chiropractic is one of the largest primary-contact health care professions in Ontario. It is a non-invasive, hands-on health care discipline that focuses on restoring function to the musculoskeletal system. Chiropractors practice a manual approach, providing a diagnosis, treatment and prevention care for disorders relating to the spine, pelvis, nervous system and joints (Ontario Chiropractic Association).

How can Chiropractic help me?

An accurate definition of health is central to understanding chiropractic wellness care. In our society today, health is often an improperly used term. Many people perceive health as “feeling good, without any pain or symptoms”; but it is much more than that. Health is really about one thing – function, functioning at your ultimate potential.

Events like car accidents and physical traumas are often out of your control, but how you are functioning and adapting to your environment on a daily basis is completely within your power. Ill health results from an inability to adapt to stressors (i.e. a weakened immune system, stress, etc.) and the result is decreased functionality.

We cannot continue to use genetics and bad luck as an excuse, which are used way too often in our health community. The “ ... it runs in my family” excuse is getting old. Have you ever wondered why when there is a “flu outbreak” not everyone gets sick? It is because only those who have lost the ability to adapt are susceptible to illness. Those of us that are functioning at a higher level deal with the virus without even knowing about it.

This is where chiropractic is different. We, as chiropractors and chiropractic patients understand that merely treating symptoms and refusing to look at the body as a whole, self-healing system is a harmful mistake. In our office, we take a broader approach to your health, and look at how you are functioning rather than just asking how you are feeling and where you’re feeling pain.

At Bolton Total Rehabilitation, the chiropractor will help restore and maintain your health and wellness by working to remove the cause of your problem. This is done through two main areas. First, the Chiropractic Adjustment removes subluxations so your body can continue to function naturally. Secondly, we will help you adopt a healthy lifestyle through our patient education that will keep you not only feeling well, but functioning well every day!

Once I start Chiropractic do I need to come for life?

At Bolton Total Rehabilitation, typically acute pains – migraines, headaches, sciatica, pinched nerve, sleeping problems, rotator cuff injuries, etc is what brings patients to seek care from a chiropractor. However, once patients get better, chiropractic care is analogous to patient care by a Dentist. Do we visit the Dentist only once we have a cavity? Do we go only when we have oral pain? Typically – no. Spinal maintenance care through Chiropractic is so important. We want to prevent the onset of pain and dysfunction through regular check ups and adjustments when needed. Once a patient has pain, it’s because they have allowed for a sufficient amount of dysfunction to accumulate. For some people, chiropractic treatment is like a regular tune-up for their back, to help deal with the daily wear and tear of life. For others, regular chiropractic care is necessary to function at their best level of health!

We at Bolton Total Rehabilitation often present to our patients the following scenario when they ask us if they need chiropractic for life :

“The gym keeps us healthy, strong, and feeling good. Do we then only go once year or two a year? Absolutely not! We incorporate it into our lifestyle, hopefully forever. Healthy habits are exactly that – things we make time for regularly. Chiropractic care is no different.”

Is Chiropractic Safe for expecting mothers?

Yes! At Bolton Total Rehabilitation we welcome expecting mothers for pre-natal care. Depending on each circumstance, chiropractic care can be very relieving for expecting mothers experiencing low back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, or pain related to the great expectations placed on their body during the 9 months. Why do children need to see a Chiropractor?

There is actually a variety of reasons for a child to see a chiropractor. In fact, the #1 reason children see a chiropractor is for wellness. Many parents nowadays are choosing to be proactive with their children’s health, rather than reactive. This fits perfectly with chiropractic, which is wellness-based and thus proactive and preventative. Many of our parents bring their newborn infants to our office on the way home from the hospital, before even going to the pediatrician.

Other common reasons for children to see a chiropractor include difficulty nursing, colic, and ear/sinus infections, which are all conditions often caused by problems with the upper neck that likely were caused by birth trauma such as C-section or forceps delivery.

Our office takes special time to help educate parents on how chiropractic care can help children children with Neuro-Developmental Disorders such as autism, ADD/ADHD, sensory processing disorder, and learning disabilities. Since chiropractic seeks to restore balance and proper function to the nervous system, chiropractic for these kids often has life-altering changes!

What is a Chiropractic adjustment, does it hurt?

The chiropractic adjustment is a quick movement through a joint to restore motion and remove interference on spinal nerves.

The “popping” sound you may sometimes hear during an adjustment is the result of gas; it is exactly the same as when you “crack your knuckles.” It’s not painful – it is caused by the change of pressure within the joint. This relieves the pressure on the joint, surrounding nerves and muscles, and most importantly restores normal mobility. Without normal mobility, other parts of your body are forced to compensate putting them under stresses they may not be anatomically and/or biomechanically prepared to endure. It is NOT bones cracking – that would just be silly!

For patients who are uncomfortable with a hands on technique, a gentle, instrument directed technique, Activator, can be used to receive the same level of care. Gentle chiropractic through the Activator can be great for patients with osteoporosis, infants, and the elderly.
