Pregnant Prenatal Care
Expecting a new child should be an exciting time for the family, especially for the expecting mother. There are various physiological and endocrinological (hormonal) changes that occur in preparation for creating an environment suitable for the developing baby. Some notable changes that occur are:
- Increased weight gain – protruding abdomen
- Pelvic changes
- Postural adaptations
Pre-natal weight gain in the breasts and in the abdomen commonly lead to discomfort in the mid and low back. Pelvic changes due to the weight and preparation for birth can sometimes lead to pelvic dysfunction which may make it difficult for the baby to get into the best possible position for delivery, this can affect the mothers’ ability to have a natural, non-invasive birth (C-section).
Chiropractic and massage care during pregnancy can provide benefits such as reducing the time of labour and delivery, relieving back pain and prevent a potential C-section delivery. There are no known contraindications to chiropractic and massage care throughout pregnancy. Gentle care for an expecting mother during this time can turn a painful and uncomfortable period of time into a pleasurable one!
Common complaints that occur during pregnancy are:
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (numb fingers/hand)
- Low back pain
- Mid Back Pain
- Neck Pain
- Poor sleeping
- Swollen ankles and legs
- Calf Cramps
- Sciatica
- Nausea
